Durat supports John Nurminen Foundation efforts to save the Baltic Sea

Since 2019, Durat has worked in cooperation with the John Nurminen Foundation in its efforts to clean up the Baltic Sea. We support the Foundation’s work, because we are impressed by the results it has achieved.

“Joining the project’s support forces is a natural extension of the fact that, for us at Durat, work done to save the environment is a natural part of our daily operations and values”, says Durat CEO Heikki Karppinen.

“Our factory is located on Rymättylä island in Naantali, so the sea is an major part of our everyday life,” he adds.

“The Baltic Sea is a unique and vulnerable ecosystem with incredible histories. We humans have benefited from the Baltic Sea for thousands of years, now it is our turn to give back. In its production, Durat focuses on the means of the circular economy and the efficient use of resources. We are pleased to continue our good cooperation in the brand new colour”, says Annamari Arrakoski-Engard, CEO of the John Nurminen Foundation.

Marine-inspired colours on the Raita bench

We have also developed a few speciality products. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of these products always go to supporting the Foundation.

Designed by Eeva Lithovius for Durat, the Raita bench is done in colours inspired by the marine environment. For each blue-white-black-green bench sold, 100 euros of the proceeds will be donated to the John Nurminen Foundation.

Durat's marine-inspired colour for the Baltic Sea

Our colour range includes a colour especially created for the partnership between the John Nurminen Foundation and Durat. Blue speckles that dot the light base colour gives a fresh marine look for the JNS special colour D0730-JNS. 10 % of the sales revenue from this pattern goes to the protection of the Baltic Sea through the foundation.

John Nurminen Foundation - Protection of the Baltic Sea and cultural contributions

The mission of the John Nurminen Foundation is to save the Baltic Sea and its heritage for future generations. They implement concrete Baltic Sea protection measures that bring results and ensure that the stories of the sea are passed on to future generations. With regard to its cultural contributions, the Foundation is an award-winning knowledge broker and producer of maritime content. The Foundation’s projects improve the state of the Baltic Sea by taking concrete measures that reduce the adverse impacts of nutrient load and environmental risks. The work is guided by measurable results and impacts.

The Foundation has launched 40 environmental projects, 34 of which have been completed. The projects reduce the adverse impacts of nutrient load and environmental risks on the sea. By treating wastewater from St. Petersburg and reducing emissions from the Lakaanjoki fertiliser plant alone, the annual eutrophying phosphorus load has been reduced by approximately 75% in cooperation with other actors.
